Ursula Le Guin was one of the only authors to ever make me feel as though a better and more just world is within reach.

If you are not acquainted with her work, The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas is a very short story that will take you only a few minutes to read, and it is a mighty challenge to our society that I hope we will one day take up.

Give it a chance to change you, just a little.

I initially read The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas when I was too young, and I hated it. I’m extremely glad that I re-read it now as an adult. Thanks Naamah ❤

I started reading Le Guin much later than I should have, but Tehanu is going to be one of those books I keep rereading because I love it so much. Tenar in that book is the sort of protagonist you almost never see in high fantasy, a middle aged widow with no particular special power other than the fact that she cares about people. I didn’t love Earthsea until I read that book.

“Is it different, then, for men and for women?“

“What isn’t, dearie?”

“I don’t know,” Tenar said. “It seems to me we make up most of the differences, and then complain about ‘em.”
